FirstLight Hydro Generating Company retained the services of Milone & MacBroom to assist with the development of Shoreline Management Manual: A Homeowner’s Guide to Shoreline Stabilization and Vegetated Buffer Zones, for the Candlewood Lake waterfront community, one of the largest lakes in Connecticut. The project includes extensive user-friendly guidelines for homeowners, engineers, landscape architects, landscape designers, and contractors.
The 148 page manual supports FirstLight’s initiatives to provide appropriate sustainable shoreline management practices and help improve water quality, stabilize banks, and enhance shoreline habitat within their impoundments.
As part of this project, homeowners wanting to make improvements on land owned by FirstLight will be required to meet and/or exceed the shoreline management recommendations outlined in the manual for projects requiring permit approval.
The Milone & MacBroom team included professionals from their practices in environmental sciences, landscape architecture, water resources engineering, civil engineering and survey. This project was the recipient of the Honor Award in Landscape Architectural Communication presented by the Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
The manual includes:
- Identification of the Importance of Vegetated Buffer and Shoreline Stabilization
- Development Design Guidelines for Vegetated Buffer Areas and Shoreline Stabilization
- Implementation Methods and Recommendations
- Details of Bioengineering and Biotechnical Stabilization Methods
