Milone & MacBroom was retained by The Gunnery, a coeducational college preparatory boarding school, to provide professional services for the design, permitting, and construction administration to convert a natural grass multipurpose field to synthetic turf. The single 140,000 square-foot field consists of a baseball diamond with a portable pitcher’s mound, a multipurpose field in the outfield, and additional practice space beyond the sidelines.
The project posed many challenges. The field is located in the town’s historic district where the design of the improvements had to maintain the character of the surrounding historic buildings and landscape. Active sanitary sewer laterals and storm pipes where relocated from beneath the synthetic turf surface. Difficult access, a short construction window, and work restrictions implemented by the owner to accommodate abutting neighbors added additional challenges to an already difficult design and construction project. Construction was completed Fall 2014.
The firm provided the following services:
- Civil Engineering/Site Design
- Landscape Architecture
- Stormwater Management
- Construction Administration
