Athletic Facilities

As one of the largest consulting firms in the Northeast, we offer a unique collaboration of specialty practices in support of new construction, as well as “as new” renovations intended to modernize today’s athletic and sports facilities at the professional, collegiate, scholastic, and recreational level.  We are a recognized leader in the planning, design, and construction inspection of outdoor athletic facilities, having been responsible for approximately $100 million in improvements.  Many of our projects involve the analysis of existing conditions of athletic facilities to identify problems and deficiencies that may affect possible expansion, evaluate the appropriate uses of activities for the facilities, and successfully complete design and construction administration of the improvements.

Our experience includes natural grass and synthetic turf field design; competition-level field/court design, including running tracks and tennis courts; seasonal domed enclosures; bleachers; field lighting; fencing; concession, restroom, ticketing, and storage buildings; accessibility; and parking and traffic areas.  Through our experience, we have found that the design of competitive athletic facilities requires the evaluation of several critical issues that may affect the quality of play and longevity of the facility.  Namely, our staff evaluates the placement and orientation of a field for optimum performance, establishes the appropriate grades for each playing surface, develops a suitable stormwater collection system, analyzes the appropriate specifications and methods of placing fill to control settlement, and selects the appropriate blend of grasses and soil structure for proper turf quality.  The sheer increase in participants of all ages and the choices of sports to play have pushed the design profession to create competitive athletic fields and courts that are safer, perform better, recover faster, last longer, and require less maintenance.  Our completed projects have included such prestigious facilities as Reese Stadium at Yale University, as well as numerous private club and school athletic facilities across New England.  Through our project experience, we have become very familiar with the requirements of the various athletic sanctioning bodies including USTA, NFHSA , MIAA, and CIAC.
