My name is Justin Durant. I am going into my third year at Rochester Institute of Technology as a Civil Engineering Technology student. Over the summer of 2019 I acted as a Field Technician Intern at Milone & MacBroom’s Bedford, New Hampshire, office. In my tenure I worked on various sites all over New England, from a Market Basket store in Westbrook, Maine, to a new bridge construction project in Newport, New Hampshire, and all over in between. Depending on the site, my duties involved testing concrete using my knowledge as an ACI certified inspector, testing material for compaction using a nuclear density gauge, and monitoring vibration with a seismograph. All of these activities are things I was either taught or certified to do thanks to Milone & MacBroom’s resources. On these sites, it was my responsibility to ensure the quality of materials used, such as concrete and structural steel, and to observe the accuracy of processes using such materials. When I wasn’t out in the field, I wrote reports for each day on site and compiled data and values recorded from tests I performed on site for distribution to our clients.

During my internship, I found the ability to work with almost full autonomy and produce valuable and necessary work to be very refreshing and encouraging. This experience has made me confident in my work and strengthened my work ethic as a student and worker. Spending time out in the field also gave me the opportunity to observe, ask, and learn about most processes on a construction site as well as what work goes into them off the site and behind the scenes.
