My name is Anaka Maher and I am currently in the middle of my Junior year as a Civil Engineering student at UConn. From mid-December to mid-January I had the opportunity to intern for Milone & MacBroom’s Transportation Department in Cheshire, CT. I became interested in an internship with Milone & MacBroom after I received one of their scholarships and learned about the kind of transportation work they do. In my four weeks, I had the opportunity to work on small parts of several different projects. I spent some of my time setting up the sheet set for a multi-use trail that is being planned in Suffield, looking at crash data for roads in Seymour and Greenwich as well as traffic volumes in Waterbury, calculating cut and fill volumes for another trail in Stamford, and had the opportunity to visit the company’s new New Haven office and a job site in Stamford. This internship gave me a valuable look into what the actual day-to-day job of a civil engineer is like and how I’ll be able to use what I learn in UConn’s classrooms to someday work on projects as an engineer rather than an intern.
