Berwick Downtown Vehicle, Bicycle & Pedestrian Study
Client: Kittery Area Comprehensive Transportation System (KACTS)Making a safer, more vibrant community
Milone & MacBroom assisted Kittery Area Comprehensive Transportation System (KACTS) and the Town of Berwick, ME, in creating a plan to make the downtown a safer, more vibrant community while planning for the future development of the former Prime Tanning industrial parcel. The study area consisted of several one-way streets as well as intersections that were confusing for drivers. Wayfinding was difficult for both pedestrians and drivers.
Working toward project goals
MMI worked with the MPO and the Town of Berwick in a collaborative public process to work toward the project goals. Through several public meetings and town department meetings, MMI staff engaged the public to establish what was important to the town and what they would like their downtown to look like.
The plan consisted of four main goals:
Crafting concept alternatives
With a specific Purpose and Need statement established early in the process, MMI staff crafted several concept alternatives for the town. Taking the best ideas from each alternative, a final concept was brought forward that met the goals of the project:
Renewed engagement
The study has brought a renewed engagement to the community for the development of their central parcel and improvement to downtown Berwick. In an endorsement of the ideas and vision produced from the concept planning study, the town was seeking to move forward certain construction projects before the study was even completed. Our work will help guide the town in determining the look and character of Downtown Berwick, ME.
