The challenge
Modernizing a pier to take advantage of new “Panamax” vessel class and future increase in marine-based shipping activity to East Coast in wake of Panama Canal improvements.
The issues
The port lacks sufficient depth of water to accommodate larger vessels. Segments of shoreline have failed structurally or lack structure necessary to accommodate berthing. Access, circulation, and upland storage for freight lack efficiency due to significant topographic changes across the site.
The process
Retained by CTDOT, Milone & MacBroom performed a hands-on assessment and inspection of all facilities and conducted stakeholder interviews to ascertain needs and deficiencies, and engaged niche market specialists to evaluate specific vessel requirements and economic analyses vetting revenue-generating cargo alternatives. In addition, the MMI team assisted in the assessment of the conditions of the pier complex to determine the most productive uses guiding the future vision for the creation of a thriving and revenue-generating port.
